Our Neurological Physiotherapy service

We know from our myth buster blog on Monday that there is a private neurological Physiotherapy service in West Cornwall now, here at Harbourside Physiotherapy. Having only been able to offer a skeleton neuro physio service on & off over the last few years, we are very pleased to have this full service up & running again.

Debbie has been the Clinical lead Physiotherapist for Stroke and Neurology at the Royal Cornwall Hospital for the past 20 years. She has extensive experience in the assessment and treatment of individuals with neurological conditions including Head Injury, Spinal Injury, Progressive neurological disorders and has a particular interest in Stroke Rehabilitation. Alongside her Occupational Therapy colleague, Debbie set up the Early Supported Discharge Team for Stroke in Cornwall ensuring that patients continued to receive therapy once discharged from hospital. We will also have another experienced neuro Physiotherapist, Emma joining us in September.

Neurological Physiotherapy is a specialist area of physiotherapy focusing on individuals with a neurological condition such as Stroke, Head Injury, Spinal Injury, Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, or any condition that affects the Brain, spinal cord and nerves affecting a person’s ability to function. Neurological Physiotherapy utilises the brain and nervous system’s ability to adapt or relearn by using differing techniques and approaches.

An initial assessment will identify how your neurological condition affects you, whether it is weakness, changes in muscle tone, sensory loss, coordination, reduced balance, difficulty walking and how it affects your everyday life. From this assessment we will identify a rehabilitation plan that will help you achieve your goals, whether it is to maintain or improve function with the aim to maximise your potential. Treatment will include promotion of normal movement, strengthening, management of muscle tone, pain management, self-maintenance, advice on equipment, supports and braces, gait re-education, hydrotherapy and fatigue management.

Please do get in contact with us to book a neuro Physiotherapy appointment – in clinic, at home or in the pool.
