Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

Some physiotherapists specialise in conditions caused by changes in the brain, such as MS. They are known as neurological physiotherapists, or neuro physios. We have 3 specialist neuro Physios at Harbourside (link).

A physiotherapist works with people with MS to assess physical difficulties and help improve movement and other functions of the body. Physiotherapy is often recommended when there is a specific problem or ongoing symptoms that affect day-to-day activities, mobility and independence. It can help whatever your level of disability, but can be a particularly valuable when physical symptoms progress or you are recovering from a relapse.

Physiotherapy's value in multiple sclerosis is now widely recognised, with access to a neuro physio deemed highly effective for enhancing daily independence and quality of life. Physiotherapy focuses on maintaining mobility, managing spasticity, reducing fatigue, improving balance & posture, plus building strength. Physiotherapy involves a holistic approach, which considers the body as a whole, rather than just focusing on the illness or injury.

Our Neuro physios can use several approaches during treatment:

  • Providing tailored exercise programmes to strengthen specific areas of the body

  • Education and advice - for example on posture, the correct way to lift and carry things, and on appropriate levels of physical activity to improve your general health or mobility.

  • Hands-on techniques or manual therapy such as massage or stretching.

  • Hydrotherapy - often highly effective for improving balance, reducing pain, and increasing mobility with minimal risk of injury

  • Exercises classes in our hydro pool, rehab gym & outdoor spaces
